Start with the shape of your artwork
For the horizontal matchbox featured in this guide, request an approximately 3:2 landscape composition. For a vertical matchbox, use approximately 2:3 portrait and choose a vertical product from our Design Your Own range. These are composition guides, not exact printing dimensions.
Keep names, dates and the main illustration away from the edges. A little extra background gives us room to adapt the image to the matchbox. You do not need to calculate physical print measurements for this tutorial.
Generate your first design
- Open ChatGPT or another AI platform that supports image generation in a separate tab.
- Copy one of the prompts below. Replace the sample names, dates, colors or greeting with your own, then ask the tool to create the image.
- Review the result. If needed, ask for one change at a time, such as a simpler illustration, darker lettering or more space around the edges.
- Save the generated image using the platform's download option. Upload the actual image file rather than a screenshot of the chat.
The three examples below were generated with these prompts as starting points. Different tools and repeated generations can produce different results; a prompt does not guarantee an identical image or perfect text.

Keep the image you like in the same conversation and request one focused revision. Try:
Keep the same illustration and color palette. Make the names larger, simplify the small details, and leave more blank space around every edge. Keep the artwork flat and two-dimensional.
If the names or date will not render correctly, use this alternative:
Keep the illustration and background, but remove all text, letters and numbers. Leave a clear blank area in the center so I can add my own names and date separately.
You can then upload the illustration through the product's template/customization option and use the available text controls to add your details. This is useful when you want editable names and dates instead of lettering embedded in a single image.

- Correct wording: check every name, letter, date and number. AI lettering can contain mistakes.

- Artwork you may use: use your own ideas and references you have permission to use; avoid copying brand logos or protected characters.
Questions before you start
Can For Matches generate the image for me on the website?
No. This tutorial guides you through generating an image on an external AI platform. Our website lets you upload artwork and customize the product; it does not provide an AI image generator.
Will the AI image print exactly as it appears on my screen?
Screen colors and printed colors can differ. The artwork may need to be resized or cropped to fit the product. Keep important content away from the edges and check all wording before uploading.
Do I have to use AI?
No. You can upload your own artwork or choose an existing design. Explore Design Your Own for the available product formats.
Is the 3:2 ratio an exact print template?
No. It is a practical starting composition for a horizontal matchbox. We can adapt your image to the product; it does not need an exact physical size for this guide.
