Single-Sided vs. Double-Sided vs. Three-Sided Custom Matchboxes

Three-sided matchboxes showing front and side printing

The difference between single-sided, double-sided and three-sided custom matchboxes is the number of surfaces available for your artwork. At For Matches, single-sided printing covers the front, double-sided printing covers the front and back, and three-sided printing adds one long side panel.

You are choosing space for your design. The matchboxes share the same paper construction and physical dimensions: 53 × 35 × 12 mm, approximately 2.09 × 1.38 × 0.47 inches. The matches have red heads. A horizontal or vertical layout changes the direction of your design, not the size or material of the box.

Choose single-sided for one clear design

Single-sided matchboxes work well when everything you want to say fits comfortably on one face. Think of a couple's initials above a wedding date, a simple business logo, or a small illustration with two names beneath it.

Decide which element should be noticed first. If it is your monogram, give it room and keep the supporting text short. If your names are the focus, a small accent can be enough. Adding a second font, a long quotation and a detailed border may leave each element too small to read easily.

Choose double-sided to separate artwork and details

Double-sided printing gives the front and back different jobs. The front can carry a crest, initials or an illustration; the back can hold your names, date or a brief thank-you. You do not have to repeat the same design on both faces.

This is a useful starting point when your first layout feels crowded. Move the supporting information to the reverse rather than shrinking every word. For a wedding favor, a monogram on one face and names with a date on the other creates a clear, coordinated pair.

Design a double-sided matchbox

Choose three-sided for a short finishing detail

Three-sided printing adds one narrow, long panel to the front and back. That extra panel suits a short date, a few initials or a concise phrase that belongs with the main design.

Keep important information on the broad faces. A long address, detailed illustration or multiple lines of script will be harder to fit into the side panel. Do not treat the striking surface as a custom artwork area; use the side-design area shown for the selected product.

Horizontal or vertical: follow the shape of your artwork

A wide name pairing or landscape illustration often sits naturally in a horizontal layout. A tall crest, stacked initials or a vertically arranged illustration may suit a portrait layout. Start with the shape of your main element, then choose the corresponding product orientation before arranging the text.

Both orientations use the same physical matchbox. You do not need a larger box simply because your design is vertical.

Upload your artwork or build your design online

You can upload a finished design or use the online customization tools to add text and image elements. Depending on the selected product and design option, the controls let you adjust fonts, colors and placement. The product preview also provides controls for moving and resizing design elements.

Check each available face before ordering. Make sure names and dates are correct, images are clear, and nothing important sits too close to an edge. A preview helps you review the layout; colors on a screen can still differ from the printed result.

Prefer a ready-made wedding design?

You can start with an existing style instead of building a layout from scratch. Our red stripe and vintage frame matchboxes show how initials and full names can occupy separate faces. The burgundy monogram crest design pairs a detailed front with a contrasting message on the reverse. Personalize the fields offered on the selected listing.
